What are civil rights?
Civil rights are not only a fight for our African-American community, but a fight for every race, creed, and religion who feels discriminated against. If you feel you have ever been denied employment, refused service, or treated unfairly because of your religion, sexual identity, economic class, or the color of your skin, please, give us a call.
The Cochran Firm of the Mid-South is here to fight for you.
Civil Rights and the police
The chief protectors of our civil rights are often times the ones found abusing them. Police brutality has been a disturbing trend found growing across the country – or more accurately, being exposed.
Police have an incredibly difficult job and many, if not most, treat their duties with the highest respect and treat your civil rights with that same respect. However, there are also many who will look to abuse their power. When interacting with police, know you are still entitled to your civil rights. If you feel like your rights are being threatened or you are being treated unfairly by police because of your class, race, or religion take these steps:
- Be respectful – do not use hostile or antagonizing language
- Calmly document – record your interaction with police and let them know that this will be turned over to your attorney
- Remain silent if required – if you feel you are being unfairly questioned or led to incrimination, calmly inform the officer you will be happy to answer questions with an attorney present

Our founder, Johnnie L. Cochran made his name as an advocate for civil rights, representing those who have been mistreated and wronged by police. He believed in representing those wronged, no matter who they were and where they came from. As his status grew, his principles remained the same – stay humble, work fervently, and help those in need.
Long after our founder’s passing, his principles live on in the Firm he built. If you have been mistreated or wronged, please call The Cochran Firm of the Mid-South.
Our attorneys are in the courtroom every day fighting for the rights of Americans like you.
