Traveling for the holidays? You’re not the only one. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s are among the most dangerous holidays for drivers. This is due to the increased amount of drivers on the road, the increased urgency to reach a destination and the poor driving conditions the winter months bring.
Here are a few travel tips to keep in mind this holiday season:
Try to avoid leaving any later than the day of a holiday. Traveling on these days quickly becomes congested and can leave you feeling stressed and in a hurry. Try to leave at least a few days before to avoid traffic.
The best time to travel and avoid traffic or congestion is anytime before 6 am and anytime after 7 pm.
Check Antifreeze levels, Brakes, Battery, Heater and Defroster, Lights and Hazards, Tires and Windshield wiper equipment before you begin your trip.
It’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast before heading out, especially those who live in colder climates. You don’t want to be caught off guard by a winter storm or road closures.
According to AAA, a winter emergency kit should include a first aid kit, jumper cables, an ice scraper and snow brush at the very least. Additional items such as water, snacks, blankets, and phone chargers are also recommended.
Take a break every 2 hours or 100 miles. Taking frequent breaks reduces fatigue and tunnel vision on the highway. Take advantage of rest stops. They’re there for a reason.
