Winter Accidents with Semi-Trucks

February 23, 2022

Driving in winter weather puts you at more risk due to more ‘stop time’ required, low visibility, poor traction and the increased unpredictability of other drivers on the road. Many drivers fail to alter their driving methods when driving in poor weather conditions, such as snow-covered or icy roads.

Here are 5 safe winter trucking tips you should follow:

  1. Slow down. Always be aware of your surroundings. In harsh winter weather, drive slow and arrive alive. If you have bald tires, drive even slower.
  2. Keep a safe driving distance. On a perfectly sunny day, you should stay at least 3-4 seconds behind a vehicle, but in winter weather, you should increase your distance to 8-10 seconds to ensure a safe stopping time in case of an emergency.
  3. Use lights and always make sure they are clean. In inclement weather, using your headlights should be a no brainer. Headlights make you more visible to other drivers. Most importantly, be sure to scrape any snow or ice from your lights to ensure they are as bright as possible.
  4. Brake accordingly. Don’t slam on your brakes. If you feel like you are losing control of your vehicle, gradually let off the accelerator. Again, do not brake. This will cause you to skid or fishtail, which can result in an accident.
  5. Never stop. If visibility is poor and you no longer feel safe driving your vehicle do not stop in the middle of the road or on the shoulder. You will be hit. Creep slowly until you can find an appropriate rest stop or pull off.

In winter, the dynamic of road travel changes significantly as they become snowy or icy with freezing rain. Driving in winter conditions requires both semi-truck and passenger vehicles to operate safely on the road.

How to Handle Winter Accidents with Semi-trucks

If you find yourself in a winter accident it is important to keep yourself safe afterward. Move out of the road and away from any bends in the road. When road conditions are bad, others may lose control of their vehicles in the same area. Call 911 if anyone is injured immediately and then call the police to file a report. Depending on the temperature, staying outside in the elements could be life-threatening to you and others involved and you will need to contact help. Take photographs to document the road and any poor conditions like damaged signs, ice, or standing water in the path.
